Uncharted

2022

An adventure of a lifetime brought to life through large-scale visual effects, blending CG environments, complex stunt work, and seamless transitions between practical and digital performances.

Our team completed over 739 shots across 23 sequences as lead VFX partner for Sony’s video game adaptation Uncharted, working on everything from complex environmental work through to CG characters and jaw-dropping stunt work.

DNEG’s teams were challenged with creating a host of intricate action sequences, including the epic 90-second ‘oner’ single shot sequence that sees Nathan and Chloe fall from a plane, leaping from a falling car to falling crates, before finally landing in the South China Sea. Here, DNEG transitioned multiple times between practical and CG characters (keeping the practical performance wherever possible), as well as creating the numerous different environments and elements that the characters fall through.

The creation of the massive South China Seas environment was particularly challenging, complete with ships flown across the ocean under helicopters. Both the environment and the vehicles were created entirely in CG. Multiple digi-doubles were used as well as complex FX as the action sequences throw in everything - up to and including cannons - to amp up the excitement.
