EDGAR WRIGHT IS BACK WITH A PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR FILM SET IN LONDON
As the main VFX partner for Edgar Wright’s ‘Last Night in Soho’, DNEG was proud to deliver over 400 shots across 61 sequences for the psychological horror movie.
Our VFX team travelled back in time to recreate London in the 1960s for several of the film’s key sequences. Using extensive reference footage and photography, we built an entirely CG photoreal environment for Piccadilly Circus in 1965 that was used for wide shots, close up scenes, and green screen replacement for car interior shots.
We also created the terrifying Shadow Men, semi-transparent ghost figures that have their facial features obscured. Performers were shot practically on set with makeup and prosthetics, and our teams then added digital enhancements to create the sunken eyes and further distort their facial features. We used a multipass photographic technique to create several takes of the different performers doing the same action, and then selectively combined them together in comp.
Our team also had a hand in the mirror shots for the two lead characters, which were shot on set using a combination of motion control, doubled sets, sliding mirrors, and synchronized performances. Our compositing team then went to work making all the shots look seamless for the final, iconic sequence.
